Before you apply

Eligibility — the three conditions.

Our founding instrument sets three conditions. All three must be met. If you are unsure about any of them, please get in touch before you apply — we are happy to help you check.

01

The child has lost both parents.

"Fully orphaned" is the language of our founding instrument and it means the child has lost both mother and father. We know this is a sensitive matter; we ask about it with respect.

02

The child lives in the parish of Llanybydder.

Our area of benefit is the parish as traditionally understood. If you are unsure whether an address falls within the parish, please ask us.

03

The help requested is within our scope.

Our grants are one-off and modest. They are well suited to specific needs (see "Our work"), rather than ongoing costs of living.

How to apply

There is no formal application form. We prefer a short written note — by email or letter — that covers the essentials. Please use plain English or Welsh; the trustees will read either.

What to include in your letter or email

  1. Your name, your relationship to the child, and how we can contact you (email, phone, or postal address).
  2. The child's first name (we do not need full details at first contact), age, and the child's current address within Llanybydder parish.
  3. A short sentence confirming that the child has lost both parents.
  4. A brief description of what you are asking for — for example, "a contribution towards a school uniform for September", "help with the cost of a music class", or "support towards an essential item for the home".
  5. Anything else the trustees should know — we respect that you are the best judge of what matters.

Where to send it

Please send your letter or email to the trustees via:

Email: info@llanybydder.org.uk
Subject line: Thomas Davies Charity — Application
Post: The Trustees, Thomas Davies Charity, c/o Llanybydder Parish, Llanybydder, Carmarthenshire SA40, Wales

What happens next

  1. Acknowledgement. We will reply to confirm we have received your letter, usually within a few days.
  2. Any follow-up questions. A trustee may write back to confirm eligibility or ask one or two additional questions. We try to keep this light and respectful.
  3. Decision. Trustees consider applications together. We aim to come back with a decision within a few weeks, and sooner where a case is urgent.
  4. Payment. If a grant is agreed, we will arrange for it to reach the child through their guardian, or, where appropriate, through the school. We do not publish names, amounts, or circumstances.

If the answer is "no"

Sometimes we cannot help — either because the conditions of our founding instrument are not met, or because the funds are not available, or because another body is better placed to assist. If that is the case, we will say so plainly and, where we can, we will try to point you towards someone who can help.

Confidentiality

We treat every application as private. We only keep the information we need to consider your request and to record the grant properly. Please see our Privacy notice for more detail.
